Where did we get the idea we can’t change?
If our bodies malfunction, we
seek help.
Shouldn’t we do the same with
our hearts?
Shouldn’t we seek aid for our
sour attitudes?
Can’t we request treatment for
our selfish tirades?
Of course we can. Jesus
can change our hearts.
He wants us to have a heart
like His.
Meet the Pastor
My name is George Lyman. I am the Pastor of
Desert Shores Community Baptist Church. I want to thank you for taking
time to learn more about our church and this humble servant. I say
servant because I am first and foremost a servant of God. I am here to
serve His Purposes. I have made this commitment because I realize how
much He loves me and He has given up more than I can ever imagine for me.
My life is the least I can give Him. I came to know the Lord when I
was 17 years old. I realized how lost and alone I was without Him.
I was blessed to be planted in a loving church that helped me grow in my
walk.
I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona and lived there until 1985.
I attended college at Grand Canyon University where I obtained my Bachelors
Degree in Psychology and met my best friend, my wife, Martha. We
became George and Martha. (A pretty good name combination, don't you
think?) We were married a week after I graduated from college.
We moved to Mohave County 6 months after we married and I took a position as
a Deputy Probation Officer for Mohave County and Martha began her career as
an Elementary School teacher.
Being a Deputy Probation Officer was a wonderful job. I was able to
work with people, helping them make positive changes in their lives.
It also taught me how to deal with difficult people. I was blessed
with being a probation officer for over 17 years and I enjoyed serving the
courts, helping people to get their lives on the right track. I guess
that is what kept me striving as a probation office and as a follower of
Christ.
It was during this time that I continued to serve in whatever capacity was
needed, at my local church. I served as a Deacon; I taught the 4 & 5
year olds and worked with the youth. I was just a big kid at heart.
I love to have fun serving the Lord. I learned how to play the guitar
and helped lead music whenever needed.
I sensed God telling me to get ready for ministry. My pastor at the
time, Jack Marshlender, told me that if I wanted to be ready as a "full
time" servant of Christ, I needed to be out of debt, to be serving wherever
God placed me and to be obedient to His word. I have continued to work
on those things, even to this day. I realize that those suggestions
are not just to get ready for ministry, but to keep oneself usable in
ministry.
God is faithful! It was not long after that, God used me to preach in
the pulpit of my home church. I answered the call to the Gospel
Ministry in the summer of 2001 and was ordained in August of 2001. I
served in a part-time position as an interim pastor at Golden Shores
Community Baptist Church from June 2001 to February 2002. I continued
to fill in and provide pulpit supply as needed. In the Fall of 2002, I
took a part-time position as the Worship Leader of First Baptist Church of
Fort Mojave. I served there until I was called to be the Pastor of
Desert Shores Community Baptist Church in January 2003.
Allow me to tell you a little about Desert Shores Community Baptist Church.
We started in 1995 as a mission church of Mohave Valley Baptist Church until
we constituted (officially formed as a non-profit organization/church) in
2000. We are associated with the River Valley Baptist Association and
the Arizona Southern Baptist Association. In June 2008 we began
worship service in our first permanent home that God provided at 2625 Landon
Drive. It is our hope to reach everyone in the area with the Light of
the Gospel, including the students of Sunrise Elementary. We invite
you to come as we grow and reach others for Christ.
You might be asking how you can help! First of all, pray for the
church and the members of our body. You can also pray for me. I
am in my sixth year as a pastor. The desire to serve God and to help
the congregation grow spiritually is greatly on my heart. There are
many needs in the BHC region. Pray that I, along with the members of
our church, might serve God and grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord
Jesus Christ. Finally, pray for me and my family. I have
embarked on becoming more fit as a pastor pursuing my seminary classes at
Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.
Thank you for taking the time to read about what we are doing and how we can
use your help to become part of God's work.
Sincerely,
George Lyman
Pastor, DSCBC
